Description
Ficus Quercifolia Oak Leaf Creeping Fig – Live Terrarium Plant
Ficus pumila quercifolia, commonly called the Oak Leaf Creeping Fig and Strings of frogs , is a miniature tropical vine prized for its tiny oak-shaped leaves and dense, low-spreading growth. Native to the humid forests of East and Southeast Asia, it’s one of the most popular foliage plants for terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums, where its fine texture and true-to-scale leaves create a realistic rainforest look without overwhelming small enclosures.

Why Ficus Quercifolia Oak Leaf is a Terrarium & Vivarium Favorite ?
The tiny oak-shaped leaves overlap into a dense carpet as the plant matures, spreading naturally across driftwood, cork bark, lava rock, and moss backgrounds. Because it stays compact — unlike the larger standard Ficus pumila — it works at a scale that suits closed terrariums, dart frog vivariums, moss walls, and humidity cabinets without needing constant pruning.
Best suited for:
Tropical terrariums and closed bioactive setups
Dart frog and reptile vivariums
Paludariums and moss walls
Vertical humidity gardens
Identifying the True Ficus Quercifolia oak leaf Variety ?
Several sellers list the standard large-leaf Ficus pumila under the “quercifolia” name. The genuine variety has distinctly lobed, oak-leaf-shaped foliage that stays under 1–1.5 cm even at maturity, with a tighter internode spacing than the common form. If the leaves are smooth-edged and oval rather than lobed, it isn’t true quercifolia.
Companion Plants
Pairs well with mosses, Selaginella, jewel orchids, miniature begonias, Marcgravia, and small aroids — the fine oak-shaped foliage adds textural contrast against broader-leafed neighbors.
Care Guide
Light: Bright indirect light or quality terrarium lighting. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the delicate leaves.
Humidity: Thrives at 60–90%. Higher humidity produces denser growth and richer leaf color.
Watering: Keep substrate evenly moist, never waterlogged. Full drying out causes leaf damage.
Temperature: 18–28°C ideal. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
Substrate: A light, moisture-retentive mix of coco peat, sphagnum moss, fine bark, charcoal, and perlite gives good humidity retention with root aeration.
Fertilizing: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted tropical plant fertilizer; this species needs minimal nutrients.
Propagation: Extremely easy — place stem cuttings on moist sphagnum moss under warm, humid conditions; new roots form quickly.
Is Ficus pumila quercifolia easy for beginners? Yes. It tolerates a range of terrarium conditions and forgives minor care lapses better than many fine-leaf terrarium plants, provided humidity stays reasonably high.
Can it grow outside a terrarium? It can, but it needs consistently high humidity to thrive — in typical dry indoor air it will struggle, so an enclosed or high-humidity setup is recommended.
How fast does it spread? Under good humidity and light, it roots and spreads quickly, often filling in bare hardscape within a few months.
Does it need fertilizer like aquatic plants do? No — it’s a terrestrial vine, not an aquatic plant, and needs only light, occasional feeding rather than aquarium-style dosing.
How is this different from regular Ficus pumila? Regular Ficus pumila has smooth, oval leaves and grows larger overall. True quercifolia has small, lobed, oak-shaped leaves and stays compact — making it the better choice for small enclosures.

I am a terrarium enthusiast and stumbled upon tropicalzone while looking for springtail culture. But as I browsed the website, I couldn't help myself from taking different kinds of mosses, terrarium plants and miniature creepers that they have.
I have since grabbed their jewel orchids, ficus pumila and quercifolia. And all of them came in very healthy conditions. They are thriving in my terrarium and look absolutely stunning. Not to mention the clean-up crew is still active and extremely helpful.

What started as a quick trip to TropicalZone for some springtails turned into building an entire miniature terrarium ecosystem! 🌱✨
I couldn't help but add their lush green moss, a striking asparagus fern, red fittonias, a Haworthia, and a jewel orchid to my cart. Everything arrived in incredibly healthy condition and has settled in beautifully. Their range is great, starting from affordable plants to more rare and exotic varieties.
Any way my terrarium plants are thriving, the setup looks stunning, and the clean-up crew is actively doing their thing!
