Ammania Sp Bonsai

Ammannia sp. 'Bonsai' is a compact red-green stem plant with small leaves and dense side-branching, used in the midground or as a low background accent in planted tanks. It is also sold as Ammania sp. 'Bonsai' and sometimes as Rotala indica 'Bonsai'. Suppliers use these names loosely, so the exact species is unconfirmed. It's an intermediate plant: more demanding than Rotala rotundifolia, easier than most red carpet stems.

Aim for moderate to high light (roughly 40–80 µmol PAR at the substrate), CO₂ at about 25–30 ppm (a drop checker should read lime green), 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5 and KH 2–6. It tolerates a range, but stability matters more than hitting exact numbers. Dose a complete fertiliser including iron and trace elements, because red tones and compact growth fade quickly when nutrients run short.

It can survive but won't look its best. Expect slower, leggier growth and some lower-leaf loss. In a low-tech tank, use moderate light, plant it in the brightest zone, dose fertiliser consistently, and trim fast neighbouring stems so they don't shade it. Liquid carbon helps a little, but injected CO₂ gives the compact, coloured result this plant is known for.

The most common cause is the switch from emersed (grown out of water) to submersed growth. The old leaves die back and new submersed leaves replace them over about 2–3 weeks. Remove decaying leaves and keep light and fertiliser steady. Then read the pattern:

• Lower leaves dying, tips healthy: shading or poor circulation. Thin the planting and improve flow.
• Tips pale, stunted or glassy: CO₂ instability or a nutrient shortage (check iron and nitrate). Fix this before raising the light.
• Brown spots with algae: too much light for the CO₂ and nutrients available. Shorten the photoperiod to 6–7 hours.

Yes, under strong light with good iron and balanced nutrients, tops can go orange to red. Lower light or heavy shading keeps it green. Colour is a reliable sign the tank is dialled in. Judge it from the newest top growth rather than older lower leaves.

Plant stems individually about 1–2 cm apart in a nutrient-rich substrate, and remove any rockwool or packaging first. Once the stems reach the surface or about 10–15 cm, cut the tops and replant them. This makes the plant bushier and gives you free cuttings. Group several stems in a loose cluster rather than one tight bunch, so light and flow reach the base.

Yes, its small leaves suit nano layouts, provided you trim often. The bigger challenge in India is heat. Many tanks run above 28°C for months, which can stunt growth and invite algae. Use a clip-on fan or chiller, shorten the photoperiod, keep the tank away from direct sun, and watch CO₂ closely, since warm water holds less of it.
