What is Chinese Water Fern, and what does China mean?
Chinese Water Fern is the common aquarium name used for Ceratopteris thalictroides, a fast-growing freshwater fern with finely divided foliage. It is also commonly sold as Water Sprite or Indian Fern.
The "China" designation should not automatically be interpreted as a formally recognised botanical variety or proof that the plant originated in China. In aquarium commerce, names such as China, Chinese or location-based labels can be used as trade or collection identifiers. Unless a seller provides documented provenance or cultivar information, it is safer to treat "China" as a commercial designation rather than a formally established cultivar name.
Under suitable aquarium conditions, Ceratopteris thalictroides can become a substantial plant, with mature growth commonly reaching roughly 20–50 cm in aquarium conditions, although final size depends strongly on lighting, nutrients, CO₂ availability, water conditions and whether it is grown floating or planted.
For aquascapes, it is particularly useful when you want fast-growing background greenery, additional cover for livestock or a plant capable of absorbing nutrients from the water column.
Is Chinese Water Fern the same as Water Sprite or Indian Fern?
Chinese Water Fern, Water Sprite and Indian Fern are commonly used names for Ceratopteris thalictroides, although aquarium trade names can sometimes be inconsistent.
The scientific name is therefore the most reliable way to identify the plant.
A useful distinction is that aquarium sellers may use "Water Sprite" for plants with somewhat different-looking leaf forms. Leaf shape can also vary depending on the plant's growth conditions and whether it has been grown submerged or above water.
When purchasing, check the scientific name and actual plant form, rather than relying only on a common name.
Can Chinese Water Fern live with shrimp, bettas, goldfish and cichlids?
Chinese Water Fern is generally suitable for shrimp and betta aquariums, where its dense foliage can provide cover and structure.
Compatibility becomes more dependent on livestock behaviour with goldfish and herbivorous or plant-nipping cichlids. Goldfish in particular may eat or uproot soft aquarium plants, while larger cichlids can damage plants through digging, territorial behaviour or grazing.
The plant itself is not normally considered toxic to these aquarium animals, but being technically compatible with a species does not mean the plant will remain intact in every tank.
For shrimp tanks, the finely divided foliage can provide useful shelter and additional surface area for microorganisms and biofilm. In a community aquarium, however, aggressive or highly active fish may damage delicate new growth.
Can Chinese Water Fern survive Indian summer temperatures above 28°C?
Yes, Chinese Water Fern can tolerate warm tropical aquarium conditions, but prolonged temperatures above its preferred range can increase plant stress and accelerate other aquarium problems.
Ceratopteris thalictroides is a tropical aquatic plant and can be maintained in warm freshwater aquariums. In Indian summers, however, an aquarium may remain at 29–32°C or higher, particularly in rooms without air conditioning.
At elevated temperatures, pay particular attention to:
Dissolved oxygen levels
Water circulation
Excessive lighting
Algae growth
Sudden temperature fluctuations
Evaporation and increasing mineral concentration
Rather than focusing only on the plant's maximum temperature tolerance, maintaining stable water conditions and adequate oxygenation becomes increasingly important as an aquarium gets warmer.
This makes Chinese Water Fern a useful option for many Indian planted tanks, but tanks that regularly become very hot should be monitored rather than assuming every tropical plant will perform identically.
Does Chinese Water Fern need CO₂, fertilizer or root tabs?
Injected CO₂ is not essential for growing Chinese Water Fern. It can grow in low-tech aquariums when light and nutrients are adequate.
Because Ceratopteris thalictroides can obtain nutrients directly from the water column, a liquid aquarium fertilizer can be more useful than relying exclusively on root tabs. Root tabs can still be beneficial when the plant is rooted in a nutrient-poor substrate, but they are not the only way to fertilize it.
A practical low-tech setup is:
Consistent aquarium lighting
Adequate nitrogen and other essential nutrients
Regular water changes
Good circulation
Stable temperature
CO₂ optional
If growth is pale, weak or unusually slow, check nutrient availability before automatically increasing the lighting. Excessive light without sufficient nutrients can encourage algae rather than producing healthier plant growth.
How should I plant and trim Chinese Water Fern (Water Sprite)?
Chinese Water Fern can be grown rooted in substrate or as a floating plant.
When planting, place the roots into the substrate but avoid burying the crown, where the roots and leaves meet. Deeply burying the crown can contribute to deterioration of the plant.
For a planted aquascape, it works particularly well in the background or side areas because of its rapid growth and potential height.
There is no universal "trim every X days" schedule because growth varies considerably between aquariums. In a healthy, well-lit setup, new leaves can appear rapidly, so trim when the plant begins:
Shading shorter plants
Covering too much surface area
Blocking circulation
Becoming excessively dense
Producing damaged or deteriorating leaves
Remove individual oversized or damaged fronds close to their base rather than repeatedly cutting the middle of healthy leaves.
If allowed to grow freely, a small initial portion can become a substantial mass, so regular thinning is usually more useful than a fixed calendar-based trimming schedule.
Where can I buy Chinese Water Fern online in India?
Chinese Water Fern (Ceratopteris thalictroides) is available online from TropicalZone with delivery across India.
When buying any live aquatic plant online, check that the listing names the plant as Ceratopteris thalictroides rather than relying only on common names such as "Water Sprite" or "Indian Fern", and look at the plant size supplied.
Being fast-growing and fine with low-tech setups, it works well as background greenery, floating cover or shelter in shrimp and community tanks.

I had an excellent experience with this website. The quality of both the aquatic plants and Bloody Mary shrimp exceeded expectations.
The plants arrived healthy, well-rooted, and free from pests or melt. They adapted quickly to my tank, contributing to a very natural and pristine aquascape.
The Bloody Mary shrimp were of premium grade with deep coloration, active behavior, and zero visible stress on arrival. Most importantly, they acclimated smoothly and have since bred successfully, which clearly reflects their quality and proper handling before delivery.
Overall, the combination of high-quality livestock, healthy plants, and reliable packaging has significantly improved both the visual appeal of my tank and the success of my breeding setup.
Highly recommended for anyone serious about aquascaping or shrimp keeping.

Hi, just wanted to share my feedback after around 2 months 😊
The aquatic plants (ferns, anubias, grass) are doing really well and have settled beautifully in my tank. Everything arrived in great condition and the quality truly shows over time.
A special mention to the Bucephalandra! it’s super healthy, vibrant, and has become one of the most beautiful highlights of my setup. It’s even started flowering with a beautiful white bloom ✨
The shrimps are also in excellent health, active, colorful, and thriving without any issues 👍
Overall, really impressed with the quality and care. Keep up the great work! 🙌
