What is Hornwort and what is its scientific name?
Hornwort is a fast-growing freshwater aquarium plant commonly sold under the scientific name Ceratophyllum demersum and also known as Coontail. Unlike rooted stem plants, Hornwort is naturally rootless and can be grown floating or loosely anchored in the aquarium. It is widely used as a background or floating plant because of its dense, fine-textured green foliage.
What temperature, pH and water hardness does Hornwort need?
Hornwort is adaptable to a wide range of freshwater conditions. For a tropical aquarium, a practical target is 20–28°C, with a pH of approximately 6.0–7.5 and moderate water hardness. Stable water parameters are preferable to frequent fluctuations, particularly when newly introduced Hornwort is adjusting to an aquarium.
How fast does Hornwort grow and how often should it be trimmed?
Hornwort is a fast-growing aquarium plant and can add approximately 3–10 cm of growth per week when light, nutrients and water conditions are suitable. In a well-maintained aquarium, fast-growing stems may need trimming every 1–2 weeks to prevent excessive shading and maintain the desired shape.
Does Hornwort need CO₂ or strong aquarium lighting?
Hornwort does not require injected CO₂ and can grow successfully in low-tech aquariums. Low to moderate lighting is generally sufficient, although stronger lighting and adequate nutrients can increase its growth rate. A starting photoperiod of around 8–10 hours per day is suitable for many planted aquariums, with adjustments based on algae and plant response.
Can Hornwort be planted in aquarium substrate, or should it float?
Hornwort is a rootless aquatic plant, so it does not need to be planted in substrate. It can be left floating near the surface or gently anchored in the background using aquarium-safe weights or other suitable methods. If anchored, avoid burying the stem deeply, as this can cause the lower portion to deteriorate.
Why is my Hornwort dropping needles or losing leaves after adding it to my aquarium?
Hornwort can temporarily shed its fine leaves, commonly called needle drop, after transportation or a sudden change in aquarium conditions. Water-parameter changes, insufficient light, nutrient imbalance or environmental stress can contribute to shedding. Remove heavily damaged portions and maintain stable conditions; healthy sections can continue growing and produce fresh foliage.
Is Hornwort safe for fish and shrimp, and does it help improve aquarium water quality?
Yes. Hornwort is generally suitable for community aquariums, shrimp tanks and fish tanks when maintained under appropriate conditions. Its rapid growth allows it to absorb nutrients such as nitrogen compounds from the water, while its dense foliage can provide shelter for shrimp, fry and small fish. It should still be trimmed regularly because excessive growth can shade other aquarium plants.

I had an excellent experience with this website. The quality of both the aquatic plants and Bloody Mary shrimp exceeded expectations.
The plants arrived healthy, well-rooted, and free from pests or melt. They adapted quickly to my tank, contributing to a very natural and pristine aquascape.
The Bloody Mary shrimp were of premium grade with deep coloration, active behavior, and zero visible stress on arrival. Most importantly, they acclimated smoothly and have since bred successfully, which clearly reflects their quality and proper handling before delivery.
Overall, the combination of high-quality livestock, healthy plants, and reliable packaging has significantly improved both the visual appeal of my tank and the success of my breeding setup.
Highly recommended for anyone serious about aquascaping or shrimp keeping.

Hi, just wanted to share my feedback after around 2 months 😊
The aquatic plants (ferns, anubias, grass) are doing really well and have settled beautifully in my tank. Everything arrived in great condition and the quality truly shows over time.
A special mention to the Bucephalandra! it’s super healthy, vibrant, and has become one of the most beautiful highlights of my setup. It’s even started flowering with a beautiful white bloom ✨
The shrimps are also in excellent health, active, colorful, and thriving without any issues 👍
Overall, really impressed with the quality and care. Keep up the great work! 🙌

Thanks to Tropicalzone, my tanks now have some rare ferns, unusual Bucephalandra varieties (check out Micro Lembah), and even a solid springtail culture that’s keeping my terrariums clean.
Pratham was very responsive and answered all my questions on WhatsApp. He even notified me when rare plant stock arrived. Definitely a great find for aquascaping hobbyists.
