What is Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red, and what colour should you expect in an aquarium?
Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red is a red stem aquarium plant selected for its ability to develop deep red to burgundy foliage under strong, consistent aquarium conditions. It is a Rotala rotundifolia form and is commonly used as a background or mid-background colour accent in planted aquascapes.
The final colour depends heavily on light intensity, CO₂ availability, nutrient balance and overall plant health. Newly planted stems may initially appear greener or less saturated while adapting to submerged growth; the newest growth is the best indicator of whether conditions are producing stronger red coloration.
For a dense group, plant individual stems rather than one tightly packed bundle so light can reach the lower leaves. A useful starting point is approximately 2–4 cm between stems, followed by regular trimming as the group fills out.
Tip: Judge colour from fresh upper growth rather than older leaves, which may have developed under different conditions.
Why is my Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red staying green instead of turning red?
If Blood Red is growing but remaining green, check light and CO₂ stability before increasing fertiliser. Stronger illumination, consistent CO₂ and balanced nutrition generally produce better red coloration than simply adding more iron.
A practical troubleshooting order is:
Light: Make sure the plant is not shaded by taller stems or floating plants.
CO₂: Avoid large fluctuations between lights-on and lights-off periods.
Nutrients: Maintain a complete fertilisation programme rather than relying on iron alone.
Growth: Look at newly produced leaves; improving conditions should first show up in new growth.
Pale, yellowing or deteriorating leaves can also indicate nutrient problems, but adding iron blindly is not a reliable solution. Blood Red needs an overall balanced nutrient supply, including nitrogen, potassium and micronutrients.
If conditions have recently been corrected, evaluate the new growth over the following couple of weeks rather than expecting existing green leaves to instantly become dark red.
Tip: Take a photograph when you change the lighting or CO₂ settings and compare the newest growth after 1–2 weeks.
Can Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red handle Indian aquarium temperatures and tap water?
Yes, Blood Red can be grown in typical tropical Indian aquarium conditions, but summer temperature control becomes important when the tank regularly approaches or exceeds 28–30°C. A practical target for a planted aquarium is around 22–28°C, with approximately pH 5.5–7.5 suitable for many planted setups.
In many Indian homes, summer room temperatures can push uncovered aquariums significantly warmer than the preferred planted-tank range. In many homes, an aquarium fan or improved ventilation can be sufficient for moderate temperature increases; a chiller becomes more relevant when the aquarium repeatedly remains excessively warm.
Tap water also varies substantially between buildings and cities, so there is no single "Indian tap-water" GH, KH value that applies everywhere. Test GH, KH, pH and TDS rather than assuming your municipal water has a particular hardness.
RO water can be useful when source water is extremely hard or has unsuitable TDS, but it should generally be remineralised or blended with suitable tap water rather than used as completely untreated pure RO water.
Tip: If your aquarium reaches 30°C or higher during summer, measure the actual tank temperature during the hottest part of the afternoon before deciding whether additional cooling is necessary.
How fast does Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red grow, and how often should it be trimmed?
Blood Red is a relatively fast-growing stem plant under good light, CO₂ and nutrition, and regular trimming is the key to producing a dense bush instead of tall, bare stems. Growth speed varies considerably with aquarium conditions, so a fixed centimetres-per-week figure would be misleading without knowing your lighting and CO₂ setup.
When the stems become tall and begin shading their lower portions, cut the healthy upper sections and replant the tops into the substrate. This creates additional stems and gradually increases planting density.
For most actively growing aquariums, inspect the plant approximately every 1–2 weeks and trim when the group begins losing its desired shape or shading itself. Avoid allowing a dense canopy to block virtually all light from reaching the bottom.
Tip: Replant healthy cuttings immediately rather than discarding them, repeated topping and replanting is one of the easiest ways to build a thick Blood Red group.
Why are the bottom leaves of my Rotala Blood Red dropping or the stems becoming bare?
Bare lower stems usually indicate that the lower foliage is being shaded or that the plant is not receiving enough light and/or stable growing conditions at its base. Dense upper growth can create a self-shading effect, causing older bottom leaves to deteriorate while the tops continue growing.
Other things worth checking include:
Excessive spacing between stems combined with weak lower light
Very dense upper growth
Sudden changes in CO₂
Nutrient deficiencies affecting new and old growth
Damaged stems after aggressive trimming or replanting
Poor circulation around an overcrowded plant group
The simplest correction is often to trim the healthy tops, remove severely bare lower sections and replant the tops with adequate spacing.
If the newly replanted stems produce healthy leaves while the old stems continue deteriorating, focus on the new growth rather than trying to restore severely damaged older foliage.
Tip: Keep enough space between neighbouring stems for light and water movement instead of planting every cutting into one tightly packed clump.
Is Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red suitable for shrimp and community aquariums?
Yes. Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red is generally suitable for planted community aquariums and shrimp setups when maintained under normal aquarium conditions. The plant itself does not require medication or chemical treatment to grow and provides additional plant cover that can be useful in a planted shrimp environment.
For shrimp tanks, pay particular attention to stable temperature, stable water parameters and safe fertiliser dosing. Newly purchased aquatic plants should also be handled according to the seller's recommended quarantine or rinsing procedure if the aquarium contains sensitive livestock.
The bigger consideration is the aquarium's CO₂ system rather than the plant itself. If you keep shrimp, avoid large or sudden CO₂ changes that can destabilise the aquarium.
Tip: In a shrimp aquarium, prioritise parameter stability over chasing maximum-red coloration.
Where can I buy Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red online in India?
Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red is available online from TropicalZone with delivery across India.
It is a red stem plant that develops its deepest colour under strong light and stable CO₂, so it suits aquascapers who want a colour accent in the background or mid-background of a well-lit planted tank.

I had an excellent experience with this website. The quality of both the aquatic plants and Bloody Mary shrimp exceeded expectations.
The plants arrived healthy, well-rooted, and free from pests or melt. They adapted quickly to my tank, contributing to a very natural and pristine aquascape.
The Bloody Mary shrimp were of premium grade with deep coloration, active behavior, and zero visible stress on arrival. Most importantly, they acclimated smoothly and have since bred successfully, which clearly reflects their quality and proper handling before delivery.
Overall, the combination of high-quality livestock, healthy plants, and reliable packaging has significantly improved both the visual appeal of my tank and the success of my breeding setup.
Highly recommended for anyone serious about aquascaping or shrimp keeping.

Hi, just wanted to share my feedback after around 2 months 😊
The aquatic plants (ferns, anubias, grass) are doing really well and have settled beautifully in my tank. Everything arrived in great condition and the quality truly shows over time.
A special mention to the Bucephalandra! it’s super healthy, vibrant, and has become one of the most beautiful highlights of my setup. It’s even started flowering with a beautiful white bloom ✨
The shrimps are also in excellent health, active, colorful, and thriving without any issues 👍
Overall, really impressed with the quality and care. Keep up the great work! 🙌
