Is Blyxa Japonica suitable for a low-tech aquarium without CO₂?
Yes, Blyxa Japonica can survive without injected CO₂, but it is not the easiest choice for a low-tech aquarium if you want a dense, compact bush. In a non-CO₂ setup, it generally grows more slowly and may remain greener and less compact. Blyxa Japonica performs considerably better when CO₂ and adequate lighting are available.
For a low-tech tank, aim for approximately 30–50 PAR at the substrate and around 7–8 hours of light per day, with good surface agitation and stable water conditions. For stronger growth and bronze or reddish coloration, approximately 70–100 PAR can be used, provided CO₂ and nutrients are sufficient. In practice, the plant can survive at around 30–40 PAR but develops stronger bronze coloration closer to 100 PAR.
For Indian aquariums where pressurised CO₂ may not be practical, Blyxa Japonica is therefore better treated as a moderate-tech plant rather than a true beginner low-tech plant.
What light, CO₂ and water conditions give Blyxa Japonica its best growth and colour?
For a compact, colourful Blyxa Japonica, use medium-to-high light, stable CO₂ and consistent fertilisation rather than simply increasing the light.
A practical target for a planted aquarium is:
Light: approximately 40–100 PAR at the substrate
Photoperiod: about 7–8 hours daily
CO₂: approximately 10–20+ mg/L, with stable availability during the photoperiod
Temperature: approximately 22–28°C
pH: approximately 5.5–7.0
Hardness: roughly 1–10 dGH
Placement: midground
Height: approximately 10–20+ cm
Blyxa Japonica is generally regarded as a medium light and CO₂ plant, with stronger colour at higher PAR. More light alone does not guarantee better growth: increasing light without sufficient CO₂ and nutrients can instead encourage algae and unstable growth.
How should I plant Blyxa Japonica without causing it to float or rot?
Plant Blyxa Japonica deeply enough to anchor the roots, but do not bury the crown or the dense base of the plant. This is particularly important because Blyxa Japonica has a short, tightly packed stem structure that can be mistaken for a conventional rosette.
Separate a large clump into smaller rooted portions where appropriate, remove damaged lower leaves, and use aquascaping tweezers to place the roots into the substrate. Keep the crown/base just above the substrate surface rather than completely burying it.
A nutrient-rich aquasoil is useful because Blyxa Japonica develops a substantial root system. If you are using inert gravel or sand, a root tab placed near but not directly against the roots can provide additional substrate nutrition. The plant also benefits from nutrients supplied through the water column.
For a clean aquascape, avoid planting one large, tightly packed clump. Spacing individual portions slightly apart allows light and water circulation to reach the lower foliage.
How do I propagate Blyxa Japonica, and does it spread through runners?
Although its grass-like appearance can make it look like a runner-producing plant, Blyxa Japonica is in fact a very short-stemmed plant that produces new shoots from the base. These rooted shoots or individual stems can be separated and replanted.
When an established clump becomes crowded:
Remove or expose the plant carefully.
Identify individual basal shoots or rooted stems.
Separate them gently, retaining roots where possible.
Replant each portion individually.
Keep the newly divided portions stable until they root again.
This makes Blyxa Japonica relatively easy to control in an aquascape and prevents it from spreading aggressively across the aquarium like some carpeting species.
Why is my Blyxa Japonica melting after planting, and how long should I wait before replacing it?
Do not replace Blyxa Japonica immediately after it starts melting. Give the plant time to adapt and look for new submerged growth before removing it.
Blyxa Japonica can shed older leaves when conditions change, particularly after planting or when light, CO₂, nutrients or water chemistry change abruptly. A practical recovery approach is:
Week 1: Remove only completely dead or decaying leaves and keep the plant anchored. Avoid repeatedly uprooting it to inspect the roots.
Week 2: Maintain stable lighting, temperature and CO₂. If the substrate is inert, ensure the plant has access to appropriate root nutrition.
Weeks 3–4: Look for small new leaves or basal shoots. New underwater growth is more important than the condition of the original leaves.
After Week 4: If the original foliage has deteriorated but new shoots are appearing, continue normal care and gradually remove the old damaged growth. If there is no new growth at all, reassess light, CO₂, nutrients and water stability rather than simply increasing fertiliser.
Established plants can also shed older leaves when nutrients or growing conditions are inadequate.
What fertilizer and substrate does Blyxa Japonica need?
Blyxa Japonica benefits from both substrate nutrition and water-column fertilisation, particularly in a high-light or CO₂ injected aquarium.
For aquasoil-based aquariums, a good-quality planted-tank substrate can provide much of the initial root nutrition. In inert sand or gravel, use an aquarium-specific root tab according to the manufacturer's dosage and replacement interval.
Because Blyxa Japonica also takes nutrients from the water column, a complete aquarium fertiliser containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and trace elements can be useful. A practical starting point is to follow the fertiliser manufacturer's recommended dose and adjust according to plant growth and aquarium nutrient testing rather than blindly increasing the dose.
Watch for pale or whitish foliage, which can indicate insufficient nutrition. Blyxa Japonica responds particularly well to balanced fertilisation when light and CO₂ are also stable. For shrimp aquariums, choose a fertiliser specifically appropriate for planted shrimp tanks and follow its dosing instructions carefully rather than assuming that more fertiliser will produce faster growth.
Where can I buy Blyxa Japonica online in India?
Blyxa Japonica is available online from TropicalZone with delivery across India. Check the current product page for the portion size supplied, price and stock.
It is a midground plant whose grass-like foliage softens rocks, driftwood and the transition between foreground and background plants. A small portion can be divided and replanted as it grows, so you can build up a clump over time.

I had an excellent experience with this website. The quality of both the aquatic plants and Bloody Mary shrimp exceeded expectations.
The plants arrived healthy, well-rooted, and free from pests or melt. They adapted quickly to my tank, contributing to a very natural and pristine aquascape.
The Bloody Mary shrimp were of premium grade with deep coloration, active behavior, and zero visible stress on arrival. Most importantly, they acclimated smoothly and have since bred successfully, which clearly reflects their quality and proper handling before delivery.
Overall, the combination of high-quality livestock, healthy plants, and reliable packaging has significantly improved both the visual appeal of my tank and the success of my breeding setup.
Highly recommended for anyone serious about aquascaping or shrimp keeping.

Hi, just wanted to share my feedback after around 2 months 😊
The aquatic plants (ferns, anubias, grass) are doing really well and have settled beautifully in my tank. Everything arrived in great condition and the quality truly shows over time.
A special mention to the Bucephalandra! it’s super healthy, vibrant, and has become one of the most beautiful highlights of my setup. It’s even started flowering with a beautiful white bloom ✨
The shrimps are also in excellent health, active, colorful, and thriving without any issues 👍
Overall, really impressed with the quality and care. Keep up the great work! 🙌
