What is Pearl Weed aquarium plant?
Pearl Weed is a fast-growing, fine-leaved green stem plant used in planted aquariums for foreground carpets, compact bushes and midground planting. It is commonly sold under the name Hemianthus micranthemoides, while Micranthemum micranthemoides is also widely encountered in aquarium plant references.
Its small leaves and branching growth make it useful for creating a soft, fine-textured appearance that contrasts well with larger-leaved plants and red stem plants. Unlike slower carpeting plants, Pearl Weed can be repeatedly trimmed and replanted to increase planting density.
It can be grown submerged in nano aquariums, community tanks and larger aquascapes, with its final appearance depending strongly on light, CO₂, nutrients and trimming.
Tip: Buy or plant Pearl Weed as multiple small portions rather than putting the entire mass into one hole; separated stems establish and spread more evenly.
How do you grow Pearl Weed as a dense aquarium carpet?
Pearl Weed can form a dense carpet when it receives adequate light, stable CO₂ and regular nutrition, but it needs frequent trimming to remain low and compact.
Separate the plant into small portions containing several stems and plant them approximately 2 to 4 cm apart. Use aquascaping tweezers to insert the stems roughly 1 to 2 cm into the substrate, deep enough to anchor them without burying most of the foliage.
Once the plant begins producing new horizontal and side growth, trim the upper portions before they become tall enough to shade the lower stems. Healthy cuttings can be replanted into empty areas.
Under a balanced CO₂ setup, the first stage is usually establishment and upward growth; the carpet becomes progressively denser as repeated trimming produces more branches. The actual fill-in period varies substantially with light, CO₂, substrate and planting density.
Tip: Leave small gaps between planting portions initially rather than creating one thick bundle; this allows the carpet to expand into the gaps.
Does Pearl Weed need CO₂, and can it grow in a low-tech aquarium?
Yes, Pearl Weed can survive in a low-tech aquarium, but injected CO₂ makes compact carpeting considerably easier to achieve. Without CO₂, growth is generally slower and the stems are more likely to grow upward instead of forming a tight foreground.
For a CO₂ aquarium, a practical starting point is approximately 6–8 hours of lighting per day, with light intensity appropriate to the aquarium's depth and fixture. CO₂ should be stable during the photoperiod rather than fluctuating sharply.
For low-tech tanks, keep expectations realistic: Pearl Weed can remain green and healthy, but it may develop a looser bush rather than a dense carpet. Increasing light alone is not a substitute for CO₂ and can increase algae pressure if plant growth cannot keep up.
Tip: If your low-tech Pearl Weed is healthy but growing vertically, trim it into a low bush instead of continually trying to force it into a carpet.
Why does Pearl Weed keep floating out of the substrate?
Pearl Weed commonly floats out when the individual stems are planted too shallowly, planted as an oversized bundle, or disturbed before their roots have anchored. Fish, shrimp activity, snails and strong water flow can also dislodge newly planted portions.
For better anchoring:
Separate the plant into small portions.
Plant approximately 1–2 cm deep.
Keep the leaves above the substrate rather than burying the entire stem.
Avoid disturbing the area during the initial establishment period.
Replant loose portions immediately rather than allowing them to collect elsewhere in the aquarium.
If fish repeatedly uproot newly planted Pearl Weed, temporarily protecting the planting area or reducing disturbance can give the roots time to establish.
Tip: Small individual portions anchor more reliably than a large handful pushed deeply into the substrate.
Pearl Weed vs Monte Carlo vs Dwarf Baby Tears: which carpet plant should you choose?
Pearl Weed, Monte Carlo and Dwarf Baby Tears (HC Cuba) can all create attractive aquarium carpets, but they differ in leaf size, growth habit and overall care requirements. Pearl Weed has fine, small green leaves and is particularly versatile because it can be maintained as a low carpet, compact foreground bush or taller midground planting. Monte Carlo develops larger, rounded leaves and spreads through creeping growth, producing a softer, broader-leaved carpet. Dwarf Baby Tears (HC Cuba) has much smaller leaves and can create an extremely fine, compact foreground when grown under strong lighting, stable CO₂ and suitable nutrients.
For aquascapers who want a plant that can be trimmed into either a carpet or bush and propagated easily, Pearl Weed offers considerable flexibility. Monte Carlo is a good choice when you prefer a rounded-leaf carpet with creeping growth, while HC Cuba is better suited to aquarists specifically looking for a very fine-textured carpet and who can maintain more demanding conditions.
Tip: Choose Pearl Weed when you want a versatile carpeting plant that can also be allowed to grow upward and form a dense green bush.
What water temperature and parameters are suitable for Pearl Weed in India?
A practical planted-aquarium target for Pearl Weed is around 20–28°C, with approximately pH 6.0–7.5 suitable for many setups. Stability is more important than repeatedly adjusting the aquarium toward a specific number.
For Indian homes, persistent aquarium temperatures around 29–30°C or higher deserve attention, particularly if the plant is also being grown under strong lighting and CO₂. Before buying a chiller, measure the actual aquarium temperature during the hottest part of the day. Improved room ventilation or an aquarium cooling fan can be sufficient when temperatures only rise moderately.
Tap water varies significantly between Indian homes, so there is no single GH, KH or TDS value that applies to every city. Testing your own source water is more useful than assuming a city-wide value.
If your source water is extremely hard or has an unusually high TDS, RO water can be incorporated into water changes, but pure RO water should not normally be used without appropriate remineralisation.
Tip: Record your tank's afternoon temperature, pH, GH and KH for several days before changing the water chemistry.
Where can I buy Pearl Weed aquarium plants online in India?
Pearl Weed is available online from TropicalZone with delivery across India.
It suits aquascapers who want a fine-textured green foreground, a flexible carpeting plant or a compact midground bush, particularly when regular trimming and replanting are part of the maintenance routine.

I had an excellent experience with this website. The quality of both the aquatic plants and Bloody Mary shrimp exceeded expectations.
The plants arrived healthy, well-rooted, and free from pests or melt. They adapted quickly to my tank, contributing to a very natural and pristine aquascape.
The Bloody Mary shrimp were of premium grade with deep coloration, active behavior, and zero visible stress on arrival. Most importantly, they acclimated smoothly and have since bred successfully, which clearly reflects their quality and proper handling before delivery.
Overall, the combination of high-quality livestock, healthy plants, and reliable packaging has significantly improved both the visual appeal of my tank and the success of my breeding setup.
Highly recommended for anyone serious about aquascaping or shrimp keeping.

Hi, just wanted to share my feedback after around 2 months 😊
The aquatic plants (ferns, anubias, grass) are doing really well and have settled beautifully in my tank. Everything arrived in great condition and the quality truly shows over time.
A special mention to the Bucephalandra! it’s super healthy, vibrant, and has become one of the most beautiful highlights of my setup. It’s even started flowering with a beautiful white bloom ✨
The shrimps are also in excellent health, active, colorful, and thriving without any issues 👍
Overall, really impressed with the quality and care. Keep up the great work! 🙌
